How many follow-ups is too many?

There is no universal number, and it depends on deal size, cycle length and how the first contact came about. What matters more is that each message has a reason to exist, that replies stop the sequence immediately, and that opting out is easy. A sequence that keeps going after someone declines is always too many.

Will prospects know the follow-up is automated?

Often, yes — generic messages are recognisable. That is an argument for fewer, better-written touches drawing on real context from the conversation, rather than for trying to disguise the mechanism. Some jurisdictions and channels also have disclosure rules worth checking.
